The anime sports some of the most famous voice actors of our generation - Hiroshi Kamiya, Mamoru Miyano, Yūichi Nakamura, and Tomokazu Sugita - who bring their entire acting chops to the table with flair. The cast, on the other hand, clearly enjoyed voicing these troubled and depressed characters. The constant back and forth of genuine despair, cries for help, and fighting for something better helps the anime from ever getting too predictable. The songs that the characters sing - on a children’s show - have extraordinarily dismal lyrics about regretting life while dancing and dressed in silly costumes. That isn’t to say the anime doesn’t dive right into the dark comedic moments. He actively deals with his bad days, his weariness, and his feeling of helplessness, but he never, at any point in the anime, gives into the problems that plague him and always reaches for the brighter side despite what his own dialogue might fool you into believing.
